A Little Liberty Break

I am starting to think sewing for The Twins, back to back, is not such a good idea.
Whilst sewing Zara's jeans we bumped heads.
It was not that big a deal but I had had enough. I try very hard to sew groovy clothes for all of my children. I deliver what I promise to the best of my ability.
To the best of my ability with what I am given to work with. Sometimes what my girls envisage is not quite what I think they are after.

We have since sorted it all out but I was seriously peed off with my daughter so I left her turn of the rota and jumped to Hugo.
A perfect palate cleanser in the form of Liberty lawn and the Aime Comme Marie Mister shirt.

Hugo sits his UMAT this year and asked me to make him the above outfit, to wear to his interview.
The shirt took me an easy five hours to sew, over two nights.
I adore the sleeve plackets, such an elegant detail.
I used reversed MoP for the buttons but I wish I had used ecru rather then white thread for the button holes.
The back has a lovely shape, slim but not fitted.
The back yoke is in two pieces, it gives some wearing ease and certainly sits smoothly.
And speaking of smooth...
How smooth is this?
That's my cheeky chappy.
~Hugo's Verdict~
I already have several lovely shirts that I have a hard choice in selecting to wear.
My favourite though has always been my aqua Liberty shirt but alas it was beautifully sewn for me too many years ago so it has begun to grow threadbare. So I was really excited when my turn came earlier than expected and I could have a new Liberty shirt made. I was even more surprised to find my new shirt completed two days later when I returned from work.
The shirt itself fits slimly but still leaves room for me to grow which I expect to with a year of labour. Although the fabric is more floral than I would have chosen when younger, I think it suits my (what I think) is an unique wardrobe. I can't wait to show off this shirt tomorrow at my cousin's christenings and I will be very keen for my turn to come again to have my other garments made to wear when I take the UMAT.

Thanks Hugo.

xx Nicole

Next, back to Zara.

  1. That fabric and pattern really suit him! I know what you mean about sewing for girls, we are starting to have a few issues where their ideas and mine don't quilt match up.

    1. Thanks Kate.
I really think I need to change to less items per turn and keep things moving.
I do understand, they are teens, they want it now but that is not always going to happen.
I think they picture something in their head and expect me to see it too...
Oh well, we learnt a life lesson.

  5. Hugo has wonderful taste; I adore the outfit he chose (I think I'd like to make it for my husband, actually!). He also sounds like such a polite and pleasant fellow. The shirt is lovely as always.

    1. He does have quirky taste Masha and he likes being smartly dressed. I think having a lot of sisters and a dad who likes clothes helps.

I am lucky, he is a nice young man.

  6. Also - in that last photo he looks JUST like Jim Morrison of The Doors. Have you heard that before? But infinitely more grounded and good.

  7. Wow what a catch he's going to be at UNI! The shirt looks amazing as it is but teamed with the waistcoat and jacket it will be something so special. I know banging heads with the twins but be very stressful but to an admiring reader it makes you all seem so much more "real" rather than characters in a ever perfect world. I so love seeing what you make and I'm totally in awe of your skill and productivity! I'm going to give the kestrel coat a go for my almost 5 year old after longingly looking at the many you have sewn.

    1. Aynsley, thank you, what a truly lovely thing to say!
I can assure you we have lots of little ego's in our big noisy household.

I am a bit nervous about sewing the coat, he wants quite fitted but I am up for it.

Make the Kestrel, I love sewing it and it so quick a coat sew!

Thank you again, you made my week.

    1. He wrote quite a essay Inder, I thought about shortening it but figured that was cheating. I asked them to write honestly.

He is such a man now and I will miss him.
      Thank you!

  11. This is DELICIOUS & Hugo, you're right - you're carving out a great style for yourself young man. And whilst my man about these parts would give you a run for your $$ on the floral shirts, you are miles ahead with the waistcoat & coat vision! 😀
...I can't wait to see the final products. No doubt, the mother-son duo will sail through UMAT interviews. Let's hope this shirt isn't worn too thin before then. 😉
PS Nicole, H reminds me so much of you! Nice to get a look-in on your son's gorgeous looks. 😀

  12. Love the shirt and the photos! It will be great to go to your interviews wearing something so special and significant, Hugo.

(Jonathan is very taken with the shirt as well, Nicole - may I ask your advice if I ever feel brave enough to try it?)

    1. I would love that too! Now to go and stroke some Liberty... I feel a bit foolish, though - followed your link to the pattern and I'm not sure if I'm looking at the right one - the the 'mister' the same as the 'monsieur'?

    2. Did I do a bad link? Very possible.
I have seen it labeled both, new packaging?

      I will check it out.

  14. Wow this shirt is beautiful! And Hugo's hair!!! It is so amazing!! I loved his comments on the bottom too. Those note cards you use with your patterns are such a great idea - I might steal it :D
Sometimes we all need to jump the rota and sew something cleansing. You did a great job with this shirt!

  15. Thank you Kristin.
Hugo and his hair... it could do with a trim but he loves it!

The pattern cards are so handy, I make notes as I sew so I actually remember next time. It is amazing how much I do forget.
    Thank you, again.

  16. Boy sure knows how to work his mumma! :) if he applies even a fraction of that grace and charm to any application/interview process he'll go far.
That's a perfect shirt Nicole, nice one.
And another +1 for the real life version of family blogging!
