And it is beautiful, from the front...

I ordered a made to measure Lekala dress pattern and muslin fit
The gorgeous lace I purchased from eBay.
The silk satin was from DK Fabric
As I had enough satin, I self lined. I can never see the point in making a natural fibre garment and using a synthetic lining.
I attached the lining at the neck, graded the seams and under stitched before hand sewing the rest in place.
I hemmed the sleeve lining a wee bit shorter but left some ease for wearing comfort.
This dress is very comfortable.
I was so focused in lining up the lace across the back I completely forgot to check how the lace placement would look after the zipper was inserted.
Oh dear.
What was I thinking?
To be honest I didn't even notice until I was editing the photos and now I just cannot look away.
Very ugly, Le sigh.
Luckily I have really long hair.
I should be more disappointed, I invested a lot of time and money in this dress and I made a big mistake.
That centre back seam is majorly fug.
But I just love this dress.
It was 35+ degrees in the courtyard when I modelled this but I was still so cool.
It skims so nicely but has enough room I could easily gain a few kilos and still wear it.
The fit is perfect, no puddling at the back, the shoulders fit, the tummy doesn't pull, the waist sits on my waist.
In conclusion, a happy ending.
I love my new posh frock.
Thank you for reading.... xx N
It is a lovely dress! Exquisite work. And the fit is just perfect, you look like a million bucks in it.
ReplyDeleteI get what you mean about the disappointment with the back seam, but really with your long hair no one will notice anything wrong. RTW dresses are rarely perfectly matched, but I do get where you're coming from.
I hope you can put it behind you (haha) and just enjoy the dress! It really is amazing!
Thank you Sweetheart!
DeleteI nearly left comments off but if I save someone else making a similar mistake it is worth it.
I do love it, I really do it feels way too comfortable to be a posh frock.
xxx to you!

You look so beautiful in this gorgeous dress! I admire your sewing talents greatly. I agree with Latte mama about RTW clothing. No one but you will ever notice.
ReplyDeleteThank you so very much Karen.
DeleteI just so wanted it to be perfect, I didn't rush, I just completed over looked it...
I feel much better now.

The fit really is perfect. As for the back, I don't think I would have noticed at all if I saw you in the dress out somewhere. We definitely notice so many more details when we see.
ReplyDeleteI am so pleased with the fit Masha, as you well know, our bodies really change after pregnancy. I am supposed to be really petite, my frame is, it is just the rest of me has thickened.
DeleteI am a firm Lekala fan now and a total convert to the muslin. Zara is a amazingly patient and skilled fitter too.
Thank you!

I just love this dress and WOW you should be so pleased with yourself - this was a hugely challenging sew. Luscious, sensual, luxurious - it's a delight. I've not tried Lekala but I have a couple of patterns around from Bootstrap who offer the same service and I'm dying to try them out to see how well they did with fit :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Kathleen.
DeleteIt was a big sew, with beautiful, delicate fabric which required a lot of concentration. Not always easy with a toddler throwing toys at you :)
Thank you for noticing and taking them time to comment.
I have tried Bootstrap too, I made one of my Twin's formal dress and me some Vado jeans. Absolutely brill!

This is a gorgeous dress!! You look absolutely beautiful, Nicole. It's always frustrating when I make a (relatively) obvious mistake on something, I try to remember that only sewists notice these things, and like you say, you have long hair and even in your inspiration pic, it had a blazer over it. I completely concur with Masha here.
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you Inder.
DeleteYou are right, it is probably something a dressmaker would notice and its not like I have a great arse that anyone would be checking out my 'thigh with a crease in it' as Elsa so generously put it :)
I have my eye on a flirty little jacket. Just trying to decide between a more formal blazer or something with a peplum...

You are amazing! I only wish I could make something as beautiful. Honestly, no one will notice the back. No one.
ReplyDeleteThank you Peta.
DeleteYou are so kind.

I'm so glad to see your finished posh frock! You look beautiful! Thanks for showing us.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ann.
DeleteAfter popping it up on Instagram and getting so much great feedback I feel a lot better about it now.

I know exactly how you feel. It's those things that you're talking up in your head as you're working on them. They always end up with some hitch don't they? I'm glad you're seeing past the back seam as there is so much that is fabulous about this dress. You should love it to bits.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteYou are right, I just wanted in perfect but, to be honest, I have only ever made one thing that was utterly perfect. A silk flower girl dress, it was flawless.
Oh well, another day another challenge.

You look really fabulous in your dress. It is beautiful fabric and the fit is just perfect. You should be very pleased with your efforts.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much.

It is truly stunning. I'm sure you will get lots of wear out of it. We look forward to hearing how the high tea fared (no pun intended). Xx
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI do love it, the only problem was I had to take it off to feed.
