(Elsa was too, more on her later)
As the dress code was black tie, a new posh frock was needed.
Now I am a wee bit busy at the moment.
So, I requested an easy pattern choice, please.
Zara ferreted through my huge collection of vintage patterns and found this little number.
She originally wanted in made in some black silk/modal she snaffled from my personal stash but then she found the piece of hammered silk I made my Aubepine dress in.
Last minute mind change.
As last time this fabric was a bear to sew, every seam needed hand basting.
I had to re-do the hem once as it dropped terribly upon hanging.
For some extra oomph we added a bemsilk lining.
Catching it under the bias waist casing.
We had a slight panic once finished, the bodice was too full!
(But some quick shoulder knots saved the day)
A simple elastic casing worked perfectly at the waist.
And was she pleased?

PS *UPDATE* Hugo won B-grade Best&Fairest!

ReplyDeleteFirst off, congratulations and many blessings on your beautiful new baby girl! She is just perfectly lovely!!! I must admit to envying your larger family. Two have never been enough for me! Zara looks gorgeous (and so very grown up) in her evening dress. It is a simple silhouette but so dressy and polished in that lovely fabric and color. I admire you and how much you manage to sew with everything else that comes with a family. You are a wonderful mother!
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen.
DeleteTrixie has slotted into out family life perfectly. We adore her.
And thank you for you lovely support, sweet comments such as yours make the long days feel appreciated and acknowledged.

Stunning! And I really like the improvised knots, they look like they belong.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jane, I was super pleased with the knots, not withstanding the fact they saved me a lot of tucking, pinning and hand sewing.
DeleteI ended up in hospital with a gall bladder attack, so lost two days sewing.

I really love reading all of your posts. I am amazed at your ability to continue to knock out such beautiful pieces with such a wee one in tow!
ReplyDeleteAww, thank you so very much, how lovely of you!

I agree, the knots look like they should always have been there. Kinda Grecian...
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed with you sewing large pieces of such evil looking slippery fabric. Well done. Zara looks divine and congrats to Hugo.
It was truly horrid to sew Shelley, but worth it, bit like child birth. I think I need some more time to forget this though.
DeleteWe are super proud of Hugo, he is not a natural sportsman but certainly gives his all!.

Congrats to you kiddos! This is a lovely sweet dress, in fact I made one for myself 42 yrs ago, a mini hem of course. I could wrap my fingers over and around the hem at the bottom. Needless to say, bending over was quite an exercise in keeping the back VERY straight! My 26 yr old daughter is now wearing her skirts and dresses that short as well and I have noticed that her posture has improved as the hems were creeping up.
ReplyDeleteI love that story Brenda, good undies and good posture!
DeleteDresses were, very very short, weren't they?
Thank you.
