Getting Funky in her Sunki

The lovely Justine sent me this pattern last year.
I had seen it and loved it but was really really trying not to buy anymore patterns.
A few weeks back,Jed and I had a dirty weekend in Adelaide(well,he went to an Ag College reunion and then on to a titty bar whilst I sat in a hotel room and hand sewed Zara's dress-with Matilda as company).

Any hoo,His Nibs was feeling a wee bit guilty the next day and took me to Spotlight(AUS version of Joanne's)and minded Tildy so I could have a good poke about!
First I found this little lot.
It is a linen/rayon mix. I found it covering its eyes with shame at the indignity at being plonked in a Sale box with Dora polar fleece(shudder).
To me it said 'Sunki'and'Help'!so I bought what was left on the roll.
This left Lidia and Matilda. For Lids I found some stretch drill in a oriental blossom print and for Tildy I found this!
An Ikat printed stretch drill.
Yes,it came from Spotlight,it was $15 a metre and there was bog's left.
Now,I have admitted to being not the greatest fan of Ikat prints but this is one of those patterns that deserves a good fabric choice.
And this pattern looks awesome in Ikat.
Tildy's measurements put her in the 18 mo size.
As a tunic it is perfect. I will add some length to make a dress.
I may take a little off the centre front and back to make it a bit  snugger fitting. I think that would look cute!
I love it with her long boots.
She loves the pockets!
And the stretchy leggings.
Which fit beautifully.
I think, sized up,they would make a snappy pair of capri pants in stretch drill.
So,what are you waiting for?
Go and get funky in your Sunki.

  2. Ah! So, so cute!! And yes, this pattern just calls for ikat (which I am not a huge fan of either). If I could just get over my fear of zippers... And I think it would look super cute more fitted around the middle.

Zips are not so scary, hand baste them first if you are at all concerned. I can blog the next one I make if you like?

  4. Thank you Nicole for posting such good detailed information. I've been waiting for Sunki and Ayashe to arrive in the mail so I can make it for Caitlin who is the same size as Tildy. This pattern really does call for Ikat and despite not being a fan, your Sunki is indeed, truly funky! As always, excellent workmanship with a stunning result.

    1. Thank Deb,wow, high praise from you!
It is a fun little dress and a quick sew nicely broken up in sections.
As I used a stretch drill I found it 'grew' a little on Tildy today and I could pinch a good inch out of the front,I would take 3/4 inch out of a rigid fabric.
I think with Tildys,I will add length to the hem and follow the A-line. However, after some excellent tips from the designer herself,I will cut and add length through the body for the Twins versions.
I think you, your daughter AND Caitlin will love it!

  8. Looks wonderful Nicole. I have not been a huge fan of the IKAT prints either and have been not so sure about some of these patterns but as always seeing them sewn up on kids "I know" almost always changes my mind. Great job.

    1. Its funny isn't it Sarah, just seeing things made up on familiar faces really do change our view of them.
I think the ikat prints look so busy on the roll they are off putting but as the Sunki is so well cut and styled they work really well!
      Thank you

  14. Aaaaagghh. I actually really love ikat, and I love this pattern, and Tildy is just Cutie McCutersons ... what's not to love?

Those leggings look like the kind of versatile pattern that you could make in every color of the rainbow - perfect for wearing under dresses during the autumn and winter. Or even for pj bottoms?
