A New Frock

 Summer is nearly over.
But there is time for one more pretty frock for Matilda.
The pattern was a vintage girls dress from the 1950's.
It is labelled a size 2 but it is very roomy.
The fabric is by Cloud 9. Its an organic poplin named Maman.
Its very very special.
I purchased a few years back after seeing an IceCream dress made from it in the Flickr pool.

I had used a tiny piece of it to make Tildy her After School ensemble.
Eeeeep, Tiny Tildy!
The dress has all those lovely vintage details.
Sewn in poppers on any bits that might gape.
The back waist band has set in elastic to ensure a snug fit.
The waistband is topstitched in place over the elastic-bonkers!
The sash is finished with a narrow hem and attached at the side seams.
Mother-of-pearl buttons.
Of course!
I didn't have quite enough fabric to make the dress so I used some caramel dotty poplin from Spotlight.
It was a happy accident, I really like it.
With eight foot of fabric gathered into the skirt it is very full.
Deliciously full.
I may have to make a tulle petticoat, just to show that fullness off!
The sleeves and neck are finished with binding, as is the hem.
Modern patterns tend to use facings but I really like the binding.
My favourite view is from behind.
I can't wait to share it modelled!

  2. It truly is a 'frock' - delicious. Tilly looks totally adorable in it :-)
And the contrast poplin works so well.

  3. It is a frock!
Thank you, I am happy with the contrast but slightly horrified at how much fabric this dress uses.
I must admit I am not looking forward to ironing it.

  5. Oh that skirt is DELICIOUSLY FULL. Definitely! So, tell me - the addition of elastic in the back - was that in the pattern or is it your modification?

  6. No, it was the pattern. I would have inserted in AFTER the fact.
The pattern advised that you could omit it for a 'chunky' child.
    So not PC!
    Thank you Inder.
