Ogden Cami by True Bias

Me again, and, well, me again.
More sewing for me.

I used to use the hashtag #selfishsewing then a dear friend of mine, Rebecca, commented that that particular hash tag really annoyed her.
Why 'selfish' to sew for yourself?
Seriously?
As parents and care givers (which a lot of us are) we are already pretty bloody unselfish and if we don't have dependants, why are we selfish to think of ourselves?

I used to use the term ironically but out of respect to my friend, no more. #sewingforme.
I needed a couple of Summer tops and I have long been admiring the Ogden cami.
I am very impressed with this pattern.
It has a longer facing, almost a half lining which stabilises the garment nicely.
All the top seams are under stitched which prevent rolling.
The shoe string straps are set in beautifully, under the facing.
It feels like a 'proper' sew not a quick whizz up sort of job and the result is very professional.
I sewed the size 10, as per my bust but I think I could have gone up a size. It feels a bit firm but not uncomfortably so... can you FBA a cami?
The Japanese lawn fabric was left over from my Boyfriend shirt. Two garments from 2.5m #ninjacutting.
My second version is white rayon left over from Liddy's Lekala dress (yet to be blogged).
This one is much drap-ier and a little more formal looking.
The low back is elegant but still covers my bra (normal bra not a feeding one)
I did question paying $13 for a camisole pattern but I am very, very happy with my purchase.
It is well cut, it is an enjoyable sew and a professional sew.
I think I will size up to the 12 and that will fix the bust pulling.

The girls like it too, Zara had request several, including grey velvet and copper coloured satin.
I think it is a pattern that will live in my cutting trolley as a #ninjapattern as it fits nicely on obscure remnants.

Thank you for reading
xx N

  1. I like Ninja patterns as well, which is why this one found its way into my cart in the Black Friday sales. I am looking forward to making this up.

Yours look great. The white one in particular looks to be a practical wardrobe addition.

    1. #ninjapatternsforthewin. I have a few 'tried and true' the Hudson pants, the After School pants and the 2+2 blouse for a start that cut from slim strips of fabric. I keep them to hand to make the most of my cutting.
I am trying not to put any fabric back into my stash, so far it is working well,
Thank you and good luck with yours!

  4. Both looks are lovely on you - side note, love the shoes! Zara's two sound very fun, and "cutting trolley"? High tech! Ever thought of doing a post showing any tips and tricks you have for organisation/storage/working space? - Amelia

    1. Thank you Amelia.
I am really excited to sew Zara's velvet version, it should look very glamorous as she has just dyed her hair copper red.

My cutting trolley is just an Ikea trolley but it works so well!
I will happily take some photos if anyone is interested, sounds fun.

  5. I've been following your blog for a long time and wanted to let you know how much I enjoy reading along and how inspiring it is for both adult and kiddie sewing (have bought several patterns after seeing your versions made up!) Love the way your style is evolving - those camis look great on you! -Karina

    1. Thank you so much Karina, it is lovely to hear from you!
I sometimes feel like my sewing looks so blah compared to the colourful sews on other blogs but I guess I have to sew what we wear.
I am making costumes at present (end of year production) and having a great time, sequins!

  6. Oooh, this is lovely on you, Nicole! I have held off on this one partly because of the bra issue. It's nice to read a review from you as I feel our figures are similar (although I believe you are taller than me!). I think you can do a dartless fba on a cami, but it seems complicated ...

    1. I am 5 foot 2, Inder and I think we are very similar, I like to see what you and Jane (from the Drapery) sew, as it gives me some great ideas.
I just purchased a nude bra, just to make sure.
Thank you and I think I will just size up, I think that will work.

  7. Woah! You've been super busy updating the blog. These are some great makes Nicole - love this one esp. Honestly...you should be taking pattern co. commissions.
I've held off getting this pattern (& conveniently forgot about it), but last week was examining a 'new' Op-shop Bardot cami top that fit nicely & intending to try replicating it. Looks like I'll be buying this pattern after all! I bought Ginger jeans pattern last week & will blame your makings for prompting that itch too. :D

    1. Elsa picked up a couple of 'Valley Girl' cami's (known as the Vag shop thanks to Jed reading the label without his glasses) and they are similar but no-where nearly as nicely cut. She decided that maybe, just maybe I could make her some...
Enjoy your Gingers, such a good pattern and great pockets.
      Thank you!

  8. Ha , like Inder said I’ve wondered about the bra issue too so great to see yours! I think as summer progresses and it gets too hot to have much fabric touching me I lose my worries about these kind of things though! This looks great.

    1. When I was young and bouncy I never minded my pretty straps showing. Now that the over shoulder boulder holders are a bit more Howard Hughs-esque I do like the foundations covered.
A nude bra seems to do the trick.
You are right, when it gets really sticky and hot I honestly Do. Not. Give. A. Fig.
      Thank you!
