Too Small for Schooldays

But she has worn it!
We had a Christmas party last night and it was chilly!
(Chilly for us, 15 celsius, 59 fahrenheit)
A little time back the Oliver+S Blog hosted a sew along for the School Days coat.
I have not joined a sew along for an age and as my baby coat is 17 years old I figured a new one was in order.
I used so oh-so-soft woollen coating that I picked up for under $10/m at a fabric store in Melbourne.
The lining was another bargain. Some silky Lecien cotton sateen I picked up in a bulk buy on eBay.
As always, the coat is another  excellent O+S pattern with all the pieces fitting together nicely.
However, I cannot recommend Deb's finishing techniques strongly enough.
Her ingenious hemming method saved me hours of hand sewing and gave a flawless finish.
Here is Trixie wearing the size 6-12 months at three months of age.
Plenty of room to grow.
Faux timber buttons sewed with red thread funky up the sweetness overload.
That's enough photos Mummy.

Thank you Deb, Carol and Amanda for running a great sew along.

  1. Aw look at that cute squishy little face! Should probably fit her perfectly next winter. Your sewing always inspires me to make more complex and detailed garments for my kids, Nicole!

    1. Thank you Jane, that is such a lovely compliment.
With such a large family, I am always washing, so lots and lots of clothes are really not necessary. Therefore I am able to spend a little more time on each item. Not to mention with them having to wear uniforms thing generally get handed down so it worth spending the extra time.

  4. This is going to be perfect once winter hits for y'all! I love this coat - the fabric looks divine and squishy, and the color is so sweet and perfect. And the lining! Also, Trixie. Trixie steals the show, although she does look a bit annoyed in these pics, like "Hello mom, why don't you dress me up in something that suits me a bit better? And is also more appropriate to the season? HELLO."

    1. She got fed up with that photo shoot very quickly Inder, it was about 38 d in our courtyard, a bit warm for wool!
The fabric is so soft and sews and washes up really well!

  5. As I sit here in 37C heat, I can't believe you're having a cold snap! She looks delicious in her lovely coat. So love the colours you've used.

  7. Adorable! She'll grow into it and out of it in no time (as you know!)

  8. She has worn it with the sleeves rolled up several times. I made Tilly a size 18 months, it would be awesome if this one rolls into that one!

  9. This coat is adorable! I'm always SO impressed with your sewing skills. Would you mind me asking if the coat still fits her? I saw photos of her wearing it on your holiday in July. I'm asking because I have niece who is the same age as Beatrix and at 14.5 months is still on the small size (about 75 cm and about 19 lbs.). I'm torn between making her a 6-12 months and an 12-18 months. If it's too big it'll end up fitting her next summer, which, obviously, would be a bummer. Thank you!

  10. Hi, thank you so much for popping by!

Beatrix is still wearing her coat with one fold of the sleeve, so it is definitely roomy enough.
That is over a singlet, dress, and cardy. There would be room for the padded vest as well.
I hope that helps and thank you for your lovely compliments.
