Jeans Baby

Do you remember the inspiration outfit pin?
Well, I have finished the shirt.
Now the jeans.
A vintage KwikSew 2123.
I made these a few years back, for Hugo.
I lowered the waist and added the groovy back pockets.
Check out the blog post above if you would like the details.
As he is still wearing them I didn't measure him up and just sewed the same size...
Um, yes, whoops. They were a bit 'toight'.
Thank you 5/8ths seam allowances. I just managed to salvage them.
The denim is a gorgeous denim/wool mix, available from Spotlight, it retails for around $17/m but frequently goes on sale.
To make them just a touch dressier I topstitched with blue topstitching thread I purchased here.
I used normal Rasant thread in the bobbin and a size 14 needle. The sewing was heavy going, a bit 'chuggy' but the results are were worth it.
The denim is quite thick so I utilised my clover clips, perfect for sewing the waist band.
worn with a Liesl+Co Metro tee
Argh, dark colours are hard to photograph.
They do look good, I promise!
~Hugo's Verdict~
I do have several pairs of these jeans but like my Liberty shirt they have become a wee bit faded and thread bare in places. So it was fantastic when my turn came around again to have some jeans made.
 I was quietly very excited.
When I slipped into my jeans for the first time it appeared I had grown somewhat from last time and to quote Gold Member from Austin Powers I was "... very toight, toight like a toiger" After the seam allowances was adjusted the jeans fitted a lot better and after severals hours of wearing them I had ridden the jeans in so to speak. They are now a lovely pair of jeans which flatter me well and I am very fortunate to have.

I may have laughed far too hard reading that...

xx Nicole

Next up, his blazer

  1. hahahaha. I laughed far too hard at reading his comments!!! Your son is so funny. The jeans look great and I'm glad you had extra seam allowance to give him some more room. You do such a great job at making jeans :D

    1. He is Kristin, I thought about editing it but I didn't, his words!

I nearly cried when I saw how firm they were, thank goodness I fitted them before the waistband or I would have had some boyfriend jeans.

(And back at you, re jeans making, yours look great Lady)

  2. That's great that you were able to adjust the seam allowances - I probably would have given up. The wool blend denim sounds wonderful!

    1. Thank you Katherine, Kwiksew usually have a 6mm seam allowance but these are 5/8ths (excuse me mixing my imperial and metric).
I am wondering if I sewed the last two pairs with the 6 mm...
I very nearly did give up. Wine was involved. :)
The wool denim is very luxe and elegant.

    1. I nearly freaked Inder, thank goodness Trixie only had a short sleep or I would have sewn the waistband in place. As I grade the seams heavily it would have been all over red rover.
Thank you, he is a good lad!

  4. Nicole, I want to go to YOUR Spotlight! Either I don't look very hard or WA doesn't stock it. The jeans are fab-o! And Hugo you have an awesome sense of humour😀. I quite love sewing jeans!

  8. All of your jeans inspire me to try making some for myself. I'm sure Hugo's going to have quite the following of young ladies at Uni!

  9. Thank you Aynsley.
Do try jeans, a hammer makes light work of any buy seam and there are some great pattern out there.
I hope he enjoys Uni, we have been flat hunting.

  10. Lol. Best laugh I've had in days! I chuckled @ your first "toigt" description N, was laughing aloud by the end of Hugo's 'toigt toiger riding' & a tear joined yours upon discovering you had laughed too much. Something to be said for enjoying the journey & not reading ahead. Ha. :)
    Great jeans! Great fit.

  11. Oh thank goodness the toiger can still prowl. :) lucky big seam allowances and clever you for not finishing without checking for fit.
The other "tiger" reference that immediately came to my mind was Rob Sitch doing his Imran Khan impersonation. Get Hugo to search youtube (assuming he knows who Imran Khan is first of course :) )

    1. They are still a bit 'toight' in my opinion Shelley but he has had compliments so he is wearing them.
I guess I have other offspring to provide Grandchildren.
I pass that link on, he loves stuff like that (I always thought Imran was hot)

  12. Nicole,
I was wondering what size tee does Hugo wear? Are AUS sizes the same as US? I'd love to surprise him and mail you one of the Night's Watch Game of Thrones shirts (the one I showed on Instagram today) - I already have the design made so it won't be any trouble and it would make me so happy :D Besides, you send me such lovely Xmas cards ;-)

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! He will be so excited!

      THANK YOU!

    3. Hugo and I LOVE GoT, I am slowly reading the books and his is hassling me to hurry up so we can discuss them.

You enjoy that premiere for me and NO SPOILERS!

      Thank you so much.

    5. That sounds about right. Here that would be a M or a L; does he like them more slim fit? or baggy? :) I can't wait to send it!

    6. Slim fit please, he is terribly vain. ;)
      Thank you so much!

  15. I've been lurking around your jeans posts for a while, as I'd love to try sewing some, either for myself or some hapless family member. I admire your Hugo's style; as I was telling my 19yo son and his friend, I was born in the 60s, so I like hair and pants that fit on a guy. ;) Beautiful job as always, Nicole, you really got that pocket placement just right!

  16. Thank you Hilary, I will pass that on, he is very proud of his hair. His father keeps threatening to shear him in his sleep.

I am working on a blazer for Hugo at present but after that, I am making some jeans for me!
I am tossing up between the Bootstrap skinnies and the new Closet Case Morgan Boyfriend jeans, heck, I may make both.
