Another Witchery Knock Off~ OOP Simplicity 5318

Another Witchery inspired sew.
Elsa fell in love with a gorgeous romper on Witchery.
Witchery.com romper no longer available
It was stunning, a delicate print in silky rayon.
I searched in vain for a similar fabric... until I had an idea.

I found this on the Spotlight website.
It is a light weight curtaining fabric but I wonder if I could try dyeing it.
It dyed surprisingly well.
I simply pre-washed the fabric and then tossed it in the washing machine with the Rit dye and then hung it on the clothes line.
That easy!
Elsa and Zara have both pulled this pattern out, at times but it is so short and neither girl liked the matching knickers.
Zara had the above pattern out, looking at the blouse and I showed the trousers to Elsa, suggesting making them into hot pants.
She agreed.
I hand sewed a deep hem and used satin binding at the waist.
I really wanted a good finish on this garment so I took the time to hand sew all the hems, including flounce seams as I was concerned they would be visible.
I had very sore fingers after pressing and shaping the flounce hem.
Elsa wanted the dress shaped but not fitted so I simply got her to pop the main dress on, inside out and I gently pinned some extra shape into it.
Like many vintage patterns it has great darts, including shoulder darts.
And those sleeves are just incredible!
Elsa wore it when we went out shopping and people were coming up to her to ask her about her outfit not to mention all the turned heads.
We both felt quite chuffed.
And it twirls!

Thank you for reading...

  1. I really enjoy all your "knock-off" posts and seeing how you adapt and recreate rtw. Lucky girls to have such a clever mother.

    1. Thank you Masha!
I am so tired these days, I need all the sewing prompts, so when the girl can show me a garment they like, I job on board with that!

  2. I agree with Masha - seeing the inspiration and reading how you processed pattern, fabric, shaping to your daughter's specs was fascinating! I couldn't agree more, you are a very talented sewist and your daughter is blessed :)

    1. Thank you Kathleen, you are very kind.

I was chatting to someone recently that plays 'Mind Games' on their phone to keep their brain active. I commented that my sewing does that. I was scoffed at and told ' I doubt it'.
I disagreed, their is a lot hat goes into sewing, not just thread to material. I am sure it saves me disappearing into a pile of washing, ironing and cooking.
Sorry to digress, thank you for your lovely compliments.

  3. I like your interpretation better than the Witchery example. Such a great idea to dye the fabric. As always your finishes are on point and the fitting is also spot on.

    1. Thank you, that is a lovely things to say (I think I like ours better too, especially the sleeves)

The dyeing was a gamble that paid off. I am considering dyeing some wool coating now. Elsa has found a skater style coat on Asos she would like me to copy, it is a pearl pink and i have some cream wool...

    2. The wool should take dye pretty well as long as it doesn't have a weird finish on it.

The outfit is lovely, I'm in awe of your productivity. And Elsa's hair is super cute that length.
