A gorgeous linen over shirt for Elsa.
The Hot Patterns Plain&Simple Superfantastic shirt.
This was one of the very first patterns I purchased over the internet. We didn't get a computer until after Tilly was born. I had a back injury from her birth and had to spend a lot of time resting so Jed got a laptop for me to have something to do.
I honestly think the Oliver+S forum and the gorgeous women I met helped me turn the black dog from the door while I healed, inside and out.
Back to sewing.
Elsa's bust put her in the size 8 but I know enough about teenage girls to know it would have more ease then she would like so I cut the size 6.
The fabric is a buttery soft linen. I sort of wish I had kept it for me. It was quite thick to sew and I did employ my handy dandy hammer and bashed the heck out of some of the seams.
It has a two piece collar (next time I will trim 1/4 inch from the point) and a very very flattering front pleat under the placket.
There is a video tutorial here, in three parts, which is very good.
The bust darts look really high but are in fact, perfect on her.
Elsa chose the shell side of some 3/4 inch wide MoP buttons.
I thought they were a bit big but I think she was right.
The cuff placket was a little different to how I normally sew one.
The placket strip is sewn before slashing, fiddly but a nice result.
The back has a lovely shape with a deep pleat, the shoulders are very neat with not too much ease.
I added side vents with a narrow double hem.
It is a little big at the shoulders but if someone had got out of the bath and let me fit it like I wanted to (up to a good place in her book) we could have easily altered it.
Next time.
The sleeves are a wee bit long too, I think I would shorten the arm length by 1/2 inch and remove the same from the sleeve cap and top of the main shoulder.
She thinks she will wear it with the sleeves rolled up.
''Beautifully made, this top shows off my slim waist and makes my legs look tiny, great job mum! This lovely flow-y top will look great with tight jeans or leggings with converse for a casual look.''
There you have it!
Thank you for reading and double thanks if you have time to say hi!
xx Nicole (and Elsa)
I'm loving the final word being given to the kids! It's fascinating to hear their voice, what matters and their emerging (or maybe already well established ;) ) self perception.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great looking shirt, nice one mum!
Thank you Shelley. I am happy she is good with her body shape. So many girls in her group are detoxing and fadding out, E&Z keep on doing their squats and lunges.
DeleteI am pretty pleased with her shirt, a couple of sizes up and in denim and I think it would work for me!

There is nothing like a well made shirt. I like the rolled sleeves and it WILL look fab with converse!
ReplyDeleteThank you

I really like it with the sleeves rolled up - very chic and sophisticated. I've said it before - your girls have very classy taste!
ReplyDeleteThank you Masha, I hope she wears it and the over size nature doesn't put her off.
DeleteI will pass on your compliments, I think that will help.

Oooh very pretty! I love the floaty nature of it. I'm a bathtub reader too ;-) I think it will look fantastic styled as she wants with tight jeans or leggings. Great job mom!
ReplyDeleteOnce E or Z disappear into the bath with a book, forget it. Could be worse, could be the lavvy.
DeleteThank you Kristin.

Looks great! I love that it looks very classy but can definitely go with the casual look as well. And I know how it is when you're at a good place in your book;)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI think casual but can be dressy is just the ticket for a teen that needs casual more often then dressy.
I am alf way through the first GOT life is seriously bothering me whenever I want disappear down that rabbit hole, so I get it too (and that is why I left her in the bath)

ReplyDeleteThank you Colette, a true compliment from you!

I love this top! So versatile! I'd wear that all the time! Tell her she looks just lovely from me. <3
ReplyDeleteThank you Inder, I will admit I tried to squeeze into it. I got it on but I was a bit scared I was going to have to cut myself out of it.....
ReplyDeletePS Elsa says 'Thank you Aunty Inder'
