So, I made a Hoodie....

My sewing Bestie's will be sniggering at this.
I really dislike the term 'Hoodie' and used to call them 'hooded tops'
but I have had to get over myself.
And sew one.
My apologies for a photo heavy post but I have had a lot of interest expressed in this project.
This pattern is all over Pinterest.
The company Lekala, I found after reading the lovely Lara's blog.
It is a very clever concept.
One puts in their (or their daughters) measurements and the pattern is made to measure.
This is awesome for my girls as they have tiny weeny tops and waists and curvy derrières.
I sewed it up in a grey marl knit that was labelled 'sports knit'.
It had a funny finish on the inside, sort of ripply, and Elsa said it is very nice to wear.
I picked it up at Eliza's of Sunshine
For a contemporary look I used the same fabric for the wrist and hip band.
Top stitched all my seams.
And I also used some of my labelling tape to cover the hood/neck edge in case it was visible.
I really really like this on Elsa.
The hood is super oversized but it works!
If I made it for me, I would shorten the sleeves a wee bit, maybe a inch?
But she likes it long.
The hood can be zipped all the way up and folded over.
Or not.
Or zipped just to the neck.
The hood is big enough to fit a pony tail bonus!
~Elsa's Verdict~
This jumper is amazing, it is sewn beautifully and is soft and warm. The hoodie is nice and big and fits over a high ponytail. "It is like a sleeping pill in the form of a jumper and it is all mine!"

I guess that means she likes it?

Thanks for reading
xx Nicole

  1. That is the best looking Hoodie ever. Love the oversized hood, the zipper placement and the seam/topstitch details on the front. All those details totally make it stand out from all the rest along with, of course, your craftsmanship.

    1. Thank you Deb. I fought the Hoodie but I had to admit defeat. I just think they are ugly, as a rule.
I do like this pattern though and I think I may even sew one for me. i have some wool/poly boucle knit (like fuzzy newborn lambs wool) that would look so nice.
Thank you for your lovely compliments.

  2. Great job! I've seen that pattern floating around and wondered what it looked like sewn up. I'm kind of obsessed with asymmetrical zippers right now.:) Did you have to adjust the sizing at all? I've ordered a Lekala pattern, but haven't had time to test it yet.

    1. Thank you!
I had pinned this one a few years back but got scared off by the site as it was a bit clunky. Elsa is fearless and she wadded in and sorted it, Hugo printed it and put it together. I just sewed it!
I did no adjustment at all, nor with her last one. I did wonder if a narrow shoulder adjustment 'may' be called for but that doesn't matter with this pattern.
I have purchased the jeans for Zara, that should be interesting as #1 its jeans #2 Zara is tiny with a serious bum!
      Good luck!

  3. Worth it just for the hood that fits a pony tail!! Nike certainly doesn't understand that. This looks so good, you've inspired me!

    1. I have never worn one, Camille (hoodie not pony tail) so I had no idea this was a'thing' but evidently it is!
Check them out, they are so cheap too.
      Thank you!

  4. This looks great! I still haven't tried my one Lekala pattern I have lol. I need to because I think they have the best designs! This hoodie has such cool lines in it. I love the over-sized hood too!

    1. They are such a great Euro look Kristin. I can see myself using them a lot for the Twins. No having to draft and fit saves me so much time and the girls tend to be 'pattern jealous' so once I have made a style for a girl, they tend not swop. So the one size, works for us.
      Thank you.

  5. Love this Nicole! I'd wear it in a heartbeat. It is a bit more sophisticated than your average "hooded top" with the asymmetrical zip and the high collar. Very versatile.

    1. Thank you Masha, I am itching to make one for me but I have to do Zara and Hugo first!

  6. funky pattern. F is still wearing the hoodie I made her 4 years ago! She wants me to remake it bigger but exactly the same (luckily I think I have enough fabric to do that!)

  7. LOVE this design! Nothing sloppy about this style hoodie. Reckon it could be made sans hood?

    1. Thank you Renae, you may be able to leave the hood off but you would need to redesign the neck.

  8. Ha, I used that exact same fabric for tracksuits for my son and a friend, and they both now use the tracksuits as pyjamas! Sleeping pill fabric is spot on!
I like the lines of this and the fit looks great. Lots of options for colour blocking with those front panels

  9. You definitely could colour block, unfortunately all my teens wear is grey!
It is a nice fabric, I hope it wears well.
    Thank you!

  10. I love this! It reminds me of the expensive sportswear I buy (when on sale) for myself! I'd totally make this for me or my up-and-coming tween, who is so hard to fit and please.

  11. Thank you Hilary.
I can completely relate to the 'hard to fit and please ' I can't blame them, it is hard enough being a teen without being teased for wearing crappy home made clothes.
Thank you so much for commenting.
